Questar III’s Rensselaer Educational Center (REC) in Troy hosted its annual college fair on October 26. The event, organized by Lisa Gilbert and the counseling office, featured 14 colleges and military representatives – the largest number that’s ever participated in the school’s college fair. Students and staff were able to receive information about the colleges and their respective programs.

Gilbert, who called the event an overwhelming success, said representatives were thrilled that students and staff both participated in the process and how well their programs aligned with REC’s career and technical education (CTE) programs.

“The representatives were very pleased with the connections they made with all of our CTE instructors during the fair, and hope to return to the center to speak within our CTE programs,” Gilbert said.

SUNY Canton representative Dan Miller, a CTE graduate, said he would accept a CTE student into his college (even if they were weaker in math and science) over a “typical” high school student who was stronger academically (but has never entered a shop setting) because they are historically more successful in college due to their experiences within the CTE programs.

Next year’s college fair is already scheduled for October 24, 2012. Gilbert said REC is looking forward to its continued expansion, hoping for even more college representation next year.
