Opening reception to highlighStudent artworkt student artwork and written work

Students at Questar III’s Catskill Academy will unveil drawings, paintings and written work at a special reception held on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 from 1 – 2 p.m. The  reception will highlight work created by students as part of their school’s Memoir Project with local artist Ruth Leonard.

Students worked closely with Leonard over the course of 20 sessions to create images that come from their past, present and where their interests may take them in the future. Many of the images reveal great imagination, humor and inner teenage angst.

The Memoir Project was a joint effort between local artists and Catskill Academy teachers Kate Mollenhauer, Nora Haran, Hara Wilt, Kim Lencewicz, Serina Jorgensen, Nancy Braley, and Social Worker Mari Warfel. Leonard, along with guest artists Ed Breslin, Alice Caulfield, Christine Hughes and Ken Polinskie, worked with Questar III teachers to develop meaningful hands-on experiences for students.

Breslin, a writer and author of the recently published memoir ”Drinking with Ms. Dutchie” read sections from his book and led discussions with the students. Caulfield, a poet, coordinated a magazine poetry workshop based on student artwork. Hughes and Polinskie coordinated with Leonard to help students construct carnival heads.

The public is cordially invited to attend the opening reception at Catskill Academy (located behind Catskill High School) to celebrate the work of these talented student artists. Please RSVP to the school by Friday, June 8 at (518) 719-1440.

The Memoir Project was made possible by Questar III BOCES in conjunction with the Greene County Council on the Arts, the Twin Counties Partnership (Columbia and Greene) Arts and Education Grant and the New York State Council on the Arts.
