Marcy Steinberg, center, received the CASHA Distinguished Service Award on October 29. She is joined by retired Questar III SLP Mariann Carcich, right, and current Questar III SLPs Liz Durocher, Candace Lider, Nancy Eberhard-Torres and CASHA President and Questar III SLP Luanne McKinlay.
“Fast,” “Quick,” and “prompt” were just a few of the words Capital Area Speech and Hearing Association (CASHA) President Luanne McKinley used to describe Questar III’s Marcy Steinberg.
Steinberg, a retired speech language pathologist (SLP) who now works part time as an SLP team leader at Questar III, was honored with CASHA’s Distinguished Service Award on October 29 during the association’s annual fall conference at the Holiday Inn in Albany.
Clearly efficiency isn’t Steinberg’s only asset. “She is very dedicated to her profession,” added McKinley.
According to McKinley, the Distinguished Service Awa
rd is CASHA’s highest honor and is presented annually to a SLP, audiologist or individual who has made outstanding contributions to their field, to the communicatively impaired, or to professional organizations that serve these groups.
Presenting the award was Questar III SLP Candace Lider, who described Steinberg as “full of life, serving as an inspiration to her students as well as other SLPs.”
Steinberg has volunteered as CASHA’s newsletter editor and currently serves as the association’s treasurer.
“I am honored to be recognized by the regional association as well as by my peers,” said Steinberg.
Having worked for the St. Lawrence County BOCES before joining the Questar III team in 1983 as an SLP, Steinberg has 32 years of experience working in the field.
Since retiring in 2010, Steinberg now works part time for Questar III as a team leader, a role in which she has 13 years of experience. In this position, she assists in running the department and encourages practicing Questar III SLPs to grow professionally and expand their comfort zone. “You’re never too old to learn,” she said.
Steinberg said she most enjoyed utilizing the computer and augmented communication devices to help the multiply-handicapped, language delayed and emotionally challenged students over the years.
Questar III’s Speech and Language Therapy (Related Services) service identifies and provides services to individuals whose social/emotional and/or academic development is affected by delayed communication skills. Services support inclusion and collaboration and may be delivered within the classroom or in more traditional “pull-out” models, based on individual needs. This service is provided to students enrolled in Questar III special education programs.
