For the second consecutive year, faculty and SkillsUSA students from Questar III’s Rensselaer Educational Center joined together to support the athletes that participated in the Special Olympics State Fall Games.

The Questar III representatives were part of the ‘Fans in the Stands’ cheering section and enjoyed encouraging the athletes with loud cheers and signs made at the event.

The supporters watched the athletes participate in several sports such as equestrian, golf, soccer, softball, cycling, bocce and cross-country running.

SkillsUSA Faculty Advisors, Danny Ramirez and Teresa Mills, enjoy taking students to this important event.

‘’It’s a small contribution the students are able to perform toward changing attitudes. Changing the world by having people view others, not by limitations that we put on them, but by what they are capable of doing,’’ Ramirez said.

The students also felt the experience was important. AIT student Kaitlin Cancelliere, from Columbia High School, loved watching the athletes play with passion and enthusiasm.

‘’The players gave their all and put their heart into it. My favorite part of the Special Olympics was making signs for the players and cheering them on. I can’t wait to go again next year,’’ she said.

Special Olympics is the largest amateur sports organization in the world. With 55,698 athletes, Special Olympics New York is the largest chapter in North America and the 6th largest chapter in the world. Special Olympics New York athletes train and compete year-round in 22 sports, the Young Athletes Program and the Motor Activities Training Program – at no cost to the athlete, their families or their caregivers.
