Questar III’s Careers in Health Care, formerly known as Health and Emergency Medical Careers, is a one year program for high school seniors interested in learning about a variety of high demand health and emergency medical careers before entering college.

People often think of nurses and doctors when they think of a career in health care, however, students in the program are introduced to numerous other careers in the industry.

Utilizing classroom instruction, professional speakers and real-life experiences at local health-related facilities, students are able to establish a solid foundation for pursuing a career in the fast-growing field.

Brian Gagne, the Careers in Health Care teacher, provides students with information that can be applied to all fields of health care such as anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and skills such as CPR and first aid.

“Students learn about careers in health care that they may never have heard of before,” Gagne said. “They become certified as American Heart Association BLS/CPR instructors and can also earn credit in a related college course.”

The students enjoy the program for its challenging coursework and insight into the medical field.

Careers in Health Care students, Catherine Donato and Courtney Riscavage, from Taconic Hills High School, enjoy the hands-on activities and the opportunity to gain more responsibility as the class progresses.

“There is never a dull moment in class and we are always motivated to learn more. We acquire a lot of knowledge that is required in the work force and learn about the college classes we will take after high school,” they said.
