Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students of all ages. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.
The Region 4 Odyssey of the Mind Tournament for schools in Rensselaer, Columbia and Greene counties will take place this year on March 9 at Rensselaer City School District.
With 78 teams registered, Questar III is looking for volunteers to help with various tasks on Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9. While every district that is competing is required to provide at least one volunteer, many more are needed to make this a successful event!
Friday night volunteers may work on setting up merchandise displays and signs, arrange problem solving sites with chairs and tables, and assist with bringing props into the building. Saturday, tasks include directing traffic, registration, sales, door keepers (making sure rooms are secure during competition), score runners, manning information booths and the creativity center, and providing food court assistance.
To sign up as a volunteer during one or more of the following time blocks: Friday, March 8, 4 – 8 p.m., Saturday, March 9, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. or 1 – 6 p.m, please click here.
If you are interested in judging (must be 18 or older in order to be qualified to judge), Questar III is also looking for at least 10 Spontaneous Judges. During the Odyssey competition, every team competing must perform a Spontaneous Problem that they have never seen before. As a judge, you will be responsible for judging their “spontaneous responses” in words and actions, or both. For Spontaneous Judges, there is never a dull moment!
