Students at Questar III’s Rensselaer Educational Center (REC) have been helping build homes with Habitat for Humanity in Troy.
Construction Technologies and HVAC students have been working on the homes being built at “Fox Hollow” located near the intersection of Burden Avenue and Cross Street with Sullivan Street. This project consists of nine new single-family homes. “Fox Hollow” is the largest building endeavor that Habitat for Humanity has ever pursued in the City of Troy.
Joe Mix, REC’s Construction Technologies teacher, has been bringing his students to Habitat for Humanity worksites since 2009. They have worked on multiple homes throughout Albany and Troy.
“It’s a hands-on, real-life experience for them. They have something they can drive by and say ‘I built that’ and show their kids and grandkids in the future,” said Mix.
Capital District Habitat for Humanity (CDHfH) is a non-profit housing partnership dedicated to building simple, decent and affordable homes with lower-income families in need. Habitat for Humanity uses volunteer labor and donations of money and materials to provide affordable homeownership to those people who would not otherwise have that opportunity. Established in 1988, it is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International serving Albany, Rensselaer and Saratoga Counties, NY. To date, CDHfH has built 72 homes.
