Three students at Questar III’s Columbia-Greene Educational Center (CGEC) have recently become employed at the new A&W Restaurant in Hudson.
Andrea Wheeler, Michael August and Ashley Moorehouse, all Introduction to Employment students, have begun their training at the restaurant and are enjoying using the skills they have learned in class at their new job.
All three students will soon be trained in every aspect of the job including register, sweets and treats, grill, fry station and hot dog station. Working at A&W Restaurant is the first job for these students who have previously done odd jobs for their families.
The students learned about the job openings from their job coach at CGEC, Michele McLaren. The coursework in their class and experience at job sites helped prepare them for working at A&W.
“I was prepared for the job because of what I have learned in Intro to Employment. It helped me be confident in the interview and know how to deal with the pressures of the job,” said Wheeler who is also in the GED program at CGEC.
Michael August, from Taconic Hills, is enjoying receiving a paycheck and is looking forward to increasing his hours over the summer to buy a car.
“This program gave me the skills to work at A&W and will help me with jobs in the future,” August said.
Introduction to Employment teacher, Hara Wilt, is very proud of her students using the skills she taught them to obtain employment.
“When we talk about student growth, I would say there has been tremendous growth with three out of five of my students employed as a result of my program,” Wilt said. “I am very proud of them!”
