A few months ago students in Questar III’s classrooms at Maple Hill Middle School watched with curiosity as the rest of the school participated in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Day. They wanted their own day and on April 24 that’s exactly what they got.

Complete with soda geysers, pasta bridges, can construction and more, students in grades four through eight rotated through six STEM stations throughout the day, all of which align with the Common Core Learning Standards.

“Our students have a beginning understanding of STEM but we wanted to give them a more in-depth experience,” said classroom Principal Kimberly Rockenstyre. “The students are very curious about STEM and everyone worked so well together throughout the day.”

In addition, each group included one older student paired with one young student.

“It was a big thing for our students to work together and cooperate,” said Teaching Assistant Victoria Duncan-Strain who organized the event. “It also gave them their own school-wide event which they really enjoyed. They talked about it for a long time afterwards!”
