On February 11, Sackett Educational Center hosted students and their families for the second family night of the 2020-2021 school year. Representatives from Hudson Valley Community College also attended to hold a session for parents on what to expect and how to best support their student when they go to college.
Donna Totaro, Assistant Director of the Center for Access and Assistive Technology (CATT) and Ann Petersen, Coordinator of Accessibility detailed the services provided by the CATT office. They also shared information on other academic or social supports at HVCC. Both Totaro and Petersen emphasized the importance of self-advocacy in college and said that students who take advantage of the services and supports are more likely to be successful in their academic programs.
While the parents learned valuable insights about preparing for the child’s college education, students played a variety of team-building and “get to know you games” with others in attendance. Students also made Valentine’s Day cards for students in Questar III classes at Red Mill Elementary school, which were a big hit when delivered!
Sackett Principal Karen Brockley says she tries to hold a family night every few months to help parents stay connected to the school community and provide resources to help their children be successful outside of school and wherever their future takes them.
