Cosmetology students and staff at Questar III’s Rensselaer Educational Center (REC) raised over $800 for breast cancer awareness in the month of October.
The money was raised by selling pink hair strands to interested staff and students. The students sold the strands during school hours, at REC’s Open House and at Tech Valley High School’s Carnival.
The 30 plus students and staff also participated in the Making Strides against Breast Cancer Walk in Albany. Wearing hot pink team t-shirts, the group joined the 15,000 attendees in zumba, a photo booth, and a three mile walk around the lake in Washington Park to support finding a cure for breast cancer.
Cosmetology teacher, Lisa Baron, was thrilled with the outcome of the fundraiser and the event.
‘’It was nice to have the students be involved in a community event. It was great to see them work as a team and they all really enjoyed participating in the event,’’ she said.
The students also appreciated the opportunity to raise money for the cause.
‘’I have learned so much throughout the month of October and I am happy I could be a part of such a great cause. I can speak for the whole class when I say the walk was worth every minute of fundraising and time put into it,’’ said Kylie Tucker who is a student at Troy High School.
Averill Park senior, Paige Claiborne said, ‘’I had a lot of fun this year and even though this is my last year in cosmetology, I still want to go in the future to help a good cause with my friends and family. I really hope that all the money contributed is going to help find a cure someday.’’
