Questar III student Maira Ahmad was recently named a finalist for the 2011-2012 Vanguard Student Recognition Award. The award is presented annually to selected high school students enrolled in enrolled in career and technical education (CTE) programs that prepare them for careers that are not traditional for their gender.
Ahmad, a junior from Catskill High School, attends the Criminal Justice program at Questar III’s Columbia-Greene Educational Center in Hudson. Nominated by instructors Ann Cioffi and Dave Dimmitt, Ahmad is one of 21 finalists across the state and only one in the Capital Region.
As part of the finalist process, Ahmad will be asked to write an essay about the importance of nontraditional careers, and why she chose to pursue a nontraditional career.
Winners will be honored at a breakfast on March 23 at the Association of Career & Technical Education Administrators (ACTEA) annual conference held at the Desmond Hotel in Albany, NY.
The Vanguard Award is administered by the New York State Nontraditional Employment & Training (NET) Project.
