Beth St. Clair Bedell and her class, all dressed up and ready for the prom.

On April 12, after weeks of hard work and planning, the students in the Questar III Achieving Individual Milestones (AIM) at Ichabod Crane High School danced the night away at their very own prom at the Kinderhook Elks Lodge along with more than 60 other students.

Going with the theme “under the stars,” the students created poster boards to look like windows looking out at the stars, constructed picture frames for formal pictures donated by CVS pharmacy, and helped set up the lodge.

Complete with a DJ and a laser light show, the students enjoyed dinner, dancing and socialization with people they can relate to.

“The kids never sat down. They ate dinner really fast and danced for four hours straight,” said Questar III teacher Beth St. Clair Bedell. “It was perfect and just so beautiful.”

According to St. Clair Bedell, the students were incredibly proud of their work, and rightfully so. Even the Elks Club members went out of their way to congratulate them.

In addition, the students gained valuable experience through this kind of community-based learning that celebrates the differences that make them unique.

“The prom is a social thing but the skills needed to pull it off including cooperative team work, setting plans and following the steps, those are skills that can be generalized to anything,” said St. Clair Bedell.
