Seniors from Questar III’s HVAC/R program at Rensselaer Educational Center visited Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s state-of-the-art steam plant on Jan. 14.

Students visited the Main Boiler House, which provides heat, cooling, and hot water to 32 buildings.

During the tour, students learned how the plant is operated through computer software that tracks water temperatures, pressures and operating efficiencies.

The plant is staffed 24 hours a day 7 days a week in order to assure quality control at Rensselaer. Temperatures, pressures, water flow, and efficiency tests are made and recorded daily.

Teacher Danny Ramirez said the field trip was a great opportunity to show students what’s needed to be part of the workforce charged with heating and cooling the educational facility.
