Educators and business leaders will have a unique opportunity to network and learn how they can work together at an Education-Business Roundtable event on Friday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 a.m. at Troy Middle School.
“The business community is so excited about this event and the opportunity to collaborate with educators,” said Superintendent Bob Horan. “It is so important for us, as educators, to hear from business leaders and work together to prepare our students for the careers of today and tomorrow.”
Questar III, the Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Center for Economic Growth worked together to organize the event. It will feature an hour-long panel discussion followed by breakout sessions and networking opportunities for educators and business leaders. The event is free for educators.
Horan urged superintendents to encourage their faculty, administrators, counselors and Board of Education members to attend the event.
“If schools have a conference day, I encourage their faculty and staff to attend. If not, it is absolutely worth releasing teachers for the morning so they can network with businesses,” said Horan. “Whether it’s a science teacher looking to create more engaging projects for their students or an English teacher who wants to know the real-world writing skills employers need, this event will help them create meaningful partnerships with the business community.”
Similar events are held in the Albany area, Horan noted, but this is the first of its kind for Rensselaer County.
“We have so many great companies right here in our backyard that are anxious to work with us,” said Horan. “Businesses have collaborated for years with colleges but that’s a short-term fix. They want to reach students earlier to help educators prepare students for careers that are changing so rapidly in today’s world.”
