Joe Mix received the G. Lucius Cary Annual Service Leadership Award at Questar III’s annual meeting in Schodack on April 4.
The G. Lucius Cary Annual Service Leadership Award recognizes outstanding leadership and contributions through volunteer service.
The award, Questar III’s highest honor, is a tribute to G. Lucius Cary, a former board member.
A Questar III construction teacher since 2000, Mix was recognized for organizing hands-on volunteer opportunities for career and technical education (CTE) students at Rensselaer Educational Center in Troy.
In recognizing Mix, Questar III
Board President Robert Gibson
spoke about how he not only teaches high school students carpentry skills, but also challenges them to put these skills into action by helping others.
Mix’s class volunteered for a project with Habitat for Humanity in Troy, where he and his students helped build a new home for a young family with a special needs child.
Questar III Board Member John Hill, who nominated Mix for this honor, called him a “master teacher.”
“We have no curriculum for volunteerism.
It is taught by example, learned by experience, and mastered by implementation of your
dedication. I believe Joe Mix not only
practices volunteerism, he has a
special talent to instill it in our young
people,” Hill wrote as part of his nomination.
